International Human Rights Activist comes to Derry On 24 th August 2011, Foyle Pride plays host to Kasha Nabagesera, winner of the prestigious Martin Ennals Human rights award, who will open the annual Foyle Pride festival running from 24th-28th August within the city.Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera is the founder and executive director of Freedom and Roam Uganda, a leading LGBT rights organization, and has campaigned tirelessly for human rights. She has appeared on national television and radio to call for LGBT rights and an end to homophobia. She has been physically attacked and has to move house regularly to escape harassment and threats to her life. Last year, her name and photo were published by the notorious Ugandan tabloid Rolling Stone, which campaigned for gay people to be hung. In January, her colleague David Kato was murdered not long after suing a paper that outed them both as gay. Police denied the killing was because of his sexuality, however homosexual acts are illegal in Uganda, and can be punished by long jail terms. In recent years human rights organizations including Amnesty International have documented numerous cases of discrimination, arbitrary arrests, unlawful detention, torture and other ill-treatment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in Uganda, and against activists exposing violations against the LGBT community. Despite this Kasha continues her work both nationally and internationally. He was the Secretary-General of Amnesty International between 1968 and 1980. A jury from ten human rights organisations, including Amnesty and Human Rights Watch, selected Ms Nabagesera for the award. The honour is designed to publicise the recipient’s work and help protect them from the dangers they face. The chairman of the award’s jury, Hans Thoolen, said Ms Nabagesera was "an exceptional woman of a rare courage, fighting under death threat for human dignity and the rights of homosexuals and marginalised people in Africa". Sha Gillespie, Chairperson of Foyle Pride said "We are delighted to welcome Kasha to Derry and are honoured that she is opening our Foyle Pride festival. Last year was a great success for us with over 6400 people taking part and was truly representative of how far Derry has come as a city and its acceptance of diversity. Although the festival is in its infancy, the support of local businesses and Derry City council has been amazing and greatly appreciated and we look forward to watching the festival grow year on year. I have no doubt that hearing Kasha speak at our launch and throughout the festival will be an inspiration to all and am delighted she has accepted our invitation."
